Paper Cups

Sustainable with less than 10% plastic incorporation

Gráfica Ideal de Águeda, SA announces another significant step towards its commitment to sustainability: new hot beverage cups containing less than 10% plastic.

This innovation became available in the market in July 2023 and aims to contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with plastic use and, consequently, to a more sustainable future.

The introduction of these cups will have a significant impact on the Portuguese market. According to legislation in force since the beginning of the year, all cups with less than 15% PE (polyethylene) are considered recyclable, provided they are single-layer, as is the case with the cups supplied by Gráfica Ideal to its customers. With this plastic reduction, these new cups are already considered ready for recycling, in line with Gráfica Ideal’s commitment to achieving the goal of having a portfolio of food-contact packaging that is 100% recyclable or reusable.

After use, the cups should be correctly disposed of in the blue recycling bin, facilitating the subsequent recycling process.

Gráfica Ideal continues to work actively with partners worldwide in search of a solution for completely plastic-free disposable cups that also guarantee food quality and safety. However, there is currently no market solution for completely plastic-free hot beverage cups. For a paper cup to hold a hot drink for more than 30 minutes, a waterproof barrier is necessary.

INNOVATION

Gráfica Ideal intends to launch paper lids until 2025, eliminating the use of plastic lids for cups. The future of cups will include the use of recyclable paper-based lids. Product innovations are important to us for two reasons: firstly, because new and functional packaging ideas can stimulate the customer, and secondly, because environmentally friendly packaging can replace ecologically harmful options.

As part of the global debate on replacing plastics, we are increasing our efforts to research new uses for cardboard and continuously improving the characteristics of our current cardboard. We are confident that cardboard packaging can be used for many new applications.

We are certified by the rigorous BRC standard, which gives our products a very high level of reliability in terms of food safety.

Our commitment to ecosystem sustainability is daily.
